Urolithin A Benefits: What the Research Actually Shows

By the Mito Renewal Editorial Team · Last updated 5 July 2026

In human trials to date, Urolithin A has been reported as safe and well tolerated, and has been associated with improvements in muscle endurance and strength and with measurable changes in mitochondrial biomarkers. The evidence is promising but still early, and we think it's worth reporting exactly what the studies found — no more, no less.

Muscle endurance in older adults

A randomised controlled trial published in JAMA Network Open (2022) gave adults aged 65–90 Urolithin A daily over four months. The researchers reported improvements in muscle endurance in the leg and hand, alongside favourable changes in mitochondrial biomarkers measured in blood, with the compound reported as safe and well tolerated.

Muscle strength and exercise performance

A trial in middle-aged adults published in Cell Reports Medicine (2022) reported improvements in muscle strength and aspects of exercise performance, along with biomarkers of mitochondrial health, with daily supplementation.

Safety and mitochondrial signatures

The first-in-human study in Nature Metabolism (2019) focused on safety and bioavailability. It reported that Urolithin A was safe, reached the bloodstream, and produced a molecular signature consistent with improved mitochondrial and cellular health after four weeks of daily use. This built on foundational work in Nature Medicine (2016) that first showed Urolithin A inducing mitophagy and improving muscle function in animal models.

What the research does not show

Being honest about limits is part of trust. These studies are relatively small and early-stage, some used higher doses than a typical maintenance dose, and they examine biological markers and specific measures — not broad promises about how you'll feel or guarantees of any health outcome. Urolithin A is not a treatment for any disease, and results vary between individuals.

The takeaway

Urolithin A is one of the more genuinely researched compounds in the cellular-health space, with human trials pointing in a consistent direction on muscle and mitochondrial measures.
